You don't need a spreadsheet. A short weekly routine keeps you in control without taking over your life.
Why weekly beats monthly
A month is long enough for a bad week to snowball. Checking in once a week keeps the numbers small and easy to fix, and it turns money from a source of dread into a routine.
The routine
- Minute 1-3: Look at your checking balance and upcoming bills for the next 7 days.
- Minute 4-6: Scan this week's purchases. Anything surprising or recurring?
- Minute 7-8: Check your debt balance. Is it lower than last week?
- Minute 9-10: Pick one small action for next week (cancel something, cook twice, move $20 to your card).
Pair it with something you already do every week, like Sunday coffee. Same time, same place, no decisions.
What to look for over time
You're not looking for perfection. You're looking for a trend: debt going down, fewer surprises, and a little more room each month.
This tip is general education, not financial advice. Examples are illustrative; your balances, rates and card terms will change the numbers.
